FYE: The Martian, Question 3
Question #3:
Do you believe the crew did the right thing in abandoning the search for Mark? Was there an alternative choice?
Answer:
In the novel, "The Martian" by Andy Weir, Mark Watney is an astronaut who gets stranded on Mars after being taken out during a storm because the rest of the crew members supposedly had no choice but to leave him behind. In my personal opinion I do not think the crew should have just left without even trying to find Mark. I believe that they could have waited a little while longer to see if the storm would pass and to see if they could help Mark. "Then one of those long thin antennae slammed into me end-first. It tore through my suit like a bullet through butter, and I felt the worst pain of my life as it ripped open my side. I vaguely remember having the wind knocked out of me [...]. The last thing I remember was seeing Johanssen hopelessly reaching out toward me." (Weir 4). In Johanssen's defense, Johanssen did try to reach out to Mark so he could help him but the storm was so bad that he had no chance but to leave Mark behind. One thing that they should have done was went to Mars better prepared because they should know that there could be many difficulties that could be encountered while on Mars. There should have been back ups for everything on Mars just in case something like that were to happen, which it did. There was no way for Mark to communicate with the rest of the crew because the storm demolished everything. Mark was not able to reach out to Lewis and the crew to tell them he was alive. I don't think that they would actually try to go and find him because I think that they were more concerned on saving themselves. They most likely figured that since Mark got hurt, he probably wouldn't have made it out alive anyways. I think the crew should have done more to try and help their fellow crew member, but maybe there was just no way of them doing that.
