17. Unlike other castaways, Mark can
approximately predict the timing of his potential rescue. How does that
knowledge help him? How could it work against him?
Since Mark can
potentially predict his rescue by previously knowing when the next mission to
mars is. He can ration his food and limit his daily intake even more, since the
Hab was built to sustain life for him and the other astronauts Mark was able to
calculate the exact amount of time he would have to survive without any
mechanical errors from the oxygen generator and water reclaimer. Since Mark is
a botanist and a mechanical engineer any problems caused from the generators
should be fixable, because he is also a botanist Mark understands plant life
and that was a big part of his journey to mars originally try to create plant
life with mars soil, because of this he can attempt to grow his own food in the
Hab but this also creates more stress and can work against him because mentally
mark is on his own he has no communication at this point in the book and knows
he only has so many days to live if he cant grow any food. For Mark believing
that their will be another mission to mars was the only thing keeping him going
at this point, if his faith of the mission were to falter in any way it could have
ended in disaster for him. The biggest challenges for Mark were mentally and
physically because he was limiting his caloric intake throughout this book and every
time he had to clean off the solar panels for power it was exhausting work, but
he knew their was a chance for him to be rescued.
