Potatoes, Duct Tape and 70's reruns

Who knew potatoes, duct tape, and ‘70s reruns were the key to space survival? How does each of these items represent aspects of Mark's character that help him survive?

In the Martian, Mark has three essential items that contribute to his survival on Mars. Potatoes, duct tape and 70’s reruns from the show Three’s Company. All of these items have important roles in Mark’s survival. Each in a way represents Mark’s character. The potatoes show Mark’s innovative skills. Mark is a botanist and he becomes the first person to ever grow a crop on Mars. In order to do this, Mark has to create a mixture of soil that will work on Mars as well as find a way to make more water. Mark uses innovation and successfully clears these obstacles and grows potatoes. The duct tape represents Mark’s strength and resourcefulness. Duct tape is a very strong material and Mark is a very mentally strong man. Mark survives a extensive amount of time in solitude. Also duct tape can be used for many different things. Mark is a very resourceful man and he solves many complex problems with not so normal tools. Mark uses duct tape to solve a lot of the challenges he encounters. The 70’s reruns of Three’s Company show Mark’s sanity and humanity. When you are all alone for such a long period of time, you are bound to go a little crazy. Watching television is something that can feel normal for Mark. It is a normal human activity that Mark gets to participate in even though he is in a not so normal situation. The potatoes, duct tape and 70’s reruns are all essential in Marks survival on Mars. While each has a practical use they can also represent Mark’s mental strength, resourcefulness and innovative skills.
